Entering Data into a Stasi Computer (1980s)
Abstract
In the 1980s, data-entry workers in MfS Department XII (Ministry for State Security or Stasi) donned blue smocks to sit in front of computers. Such attire is traditionally associated with industry, not with the information sciences. The choice emphasized the GDR’s history as an industrial society.
