Forest Dieback: Cover, Der Spiegel (1981)
Abstract
With the headline “Der Wald stirbt” [“The Forest is Dying”], this 1981 Spiegel cover page made it clear to readers that industrial byproducts, mainly sulfur dioxide emissions, were responsible for forest dieback. When these emissions came into contact with water, they formed sulfurous acid and sulfuric acid (or acid rain), which polluted soil and damaged trees.
