Allegorical Depiction of the Decline of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation: The Judgment of Time (1805)

Abstract

Over the course of the Napoleonic Wars, the Holy Roman Empire dissolved. This 1805 caricature entitled The Judgment of Time [Das Gericht der Zeit] makes mocking reference to this. Here, the Napoleonic eagle has plunged the double-headed imperial eagle into the depths. The monstrous figure in the center symbolizes the “Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation,” which is not capable of survival.
