Atomic Power from Rheinsberg (1966)

The film sequence shows the commencement of operations at the Rheinsberg nuclear power plant in the GDR on April 30, 1966. A pressurized water reactor of Soviet design, Rheinsberg was the first nuclear power plant in the GDR to be used to generate electricity. The film offers a glimpse inside the plant’s control room at the moment the nuclear reactor was started up. Additionally, the film describes the various safety measures in place at the plant and gives viewers a close look at the internal construction of the reactor before it became operational. The film presents nuclear power as a future-oriented technology based on the latest technical developments and scientific research. The Rheinsberg nuclear power plant was shut down in 1990 for safety reasons.
