Jacques Callot, Les Bohémiens en marche: l’avant-garde (1621/35)

Abstract

The Lorrainian artist Jacques Callot is mostly known for his depictions of the horrors of the Thirty Years War. This copper engraving from his series Les Bohémiens en marche shows the Protestant vanguard (l’avant-garde) migrating from Bohemia in the aftermath of the Battle at White Mountain in 1620. The image shows entire families leaving the country with all their belongings. A great number of these refugees settled in Protestant Saxony.
