While German leadership in global issues has been received favorably in many parts of the world, Germany’s political and economic dominance (whether real or perceived) has irritated others. Perceptions of German smugness and the country’s purported success in having “mastered the past” have led some to fear that Germany is exporting and imposing its own societal norms (including liberal attitudes toward sexual minorities) upon its European neighbors. German self-perceptions about German industry have also evolved in the wake of damaging scandals, including the embarrassing Volkswagen emissions scandal of 2015. But there have been “Made in Germany” successes as well. Germanness thus remains a work in progress—at home and abroad.
